Keep it readable: contrast rules
Dark Halloween backgrounds make it easy to lose your text. Before you post or print:
- Light text on dark grounds. Cream, bone white or moonlight on black or night blue reads well. Mid-orange text on black is fine for big headlines, but not for small print.
- Avoid orange on purple and green on orange for body text: they vibrate and are hard to read.
- Check contrast with a free contrast checker. For normal-size text, aim for a ratio of at least 4.5:1.
- For signs, think distance. A window sign read from the sidewalk needs bolder letters and stronger contrast than a post viewed on a phone.
Using these on signs and vinyl
Screen colors and printed colors are not the same. If you are turning a palette into window graphics or a printed banner:
- Ask your sign shop to match the HEX codes to the closest vinyl color or Pantone they stock.
- Request a printed proof for large runs. Oranges and purples shift the most between screen and print.
- Black vinyl with orange print is cheaper than full-color printing on large windows.
