How to use a palette

  • Give each color a job: one background color, one for headings and large shapes, one accent for small details and buttons, and a neutral for body text.
  • Start with 60 / 30 / 10: about 60% main color, 30% secondary, 10% accent.
  • Keep text readable: dark text on a light background (Espresso on Ivory, Ink on Sand) reads far better than orange on brown.
  • Do not use all five at full strength in one design. Pick three, and use the others as tints.

Screen versus print

HEX codes describe colors on a screen. On paper, vinyl or acrylic the same code can look darker or duller, depending on the printer, ink and material. For printed work, ask for a printed proof, look at it in daylight, and for signs compare it with a physical swatch from your vinyl or paint supplier. Warm oranges and golds shift the most, so check them first.
