Google Business Profile: A Monthly Checklist for Local Businesses

A simple monthly routine for your Google Business Profile: correct details, categories, photos, posts, review replies and what to measure, so more nearby customers find and call you.

Tool for this: SignTik — Social media, Google Business Profile and SEO run for you, month after month.

When someone nearby searches for what you sell, Google often shows a map with three businesses before any website. Your Google Business Profile decides whether you are one of them, and whether people call you once they see it. It is free, but it rewards owners who keep it current. This is the monthly routine we use with SignTik clients.

Once: set the foundations right

  • Name: your real business name, exactly as on your signboard. Adding keywords to the name breaks Google's guidelines and can get the profile suspended.
  • Primary category: the one that best describes your main business (for example Bakery, not Food). Add a few accurate secondary categories.
  • Address or service area: a real location customers can visit, or a service area if you go to customers.
  • Phone and website: a number that is answered, and a link to the right page of your site.
  • Hours: regular hours, plus special hours for holidays.
  • Description: two or three plain sentences about what you do, for whom and where.

Every month: the checklist

Photos that work

  • The outside of your shop in daylight, so people recognize it when they arrive. Your signboard should be clear and readable.
  • The inside, your team at work, and your best products or finished jobs.
  • Real photos, not stock images. Avoid text-heavy graphics as your main photos.

Reviews: ask, then reply

Ask in person at the end of a good job, or send the review link by WhatsApp or SMS. Never offer discounts or gifts in exchange for reviews, and never post reviews for yourself; both break Google's rules.

Reply to every review within a few days:

  • Good review: thank them by name and mention what they bought or what you did.
  • Bad review: stay calm, apologize for the experience, and offer to fix it offline with a phone number. Other customers judge you by this reply.

Posts: short and useful

A good post has one photo, two or three lines and one action: Call now, Order, Book. Ideas: this month's offer, a new product, a finished project, a holiday timing change.

What to measure

In the Performance section, look at calls, direction requests, website clicks and the searches people used to find you. Compare month to month. If calls drop, check your hours, phone number and the latest reviews first.
